Frequently seen around New Zealand, especially the North Island during the summer. Several non-fatal attacks in the northern North Island (Mangawhai and Goat Island Bay) have been attributed to this species. Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ (Ref. 5755). Also Ref. 244, 9997, 45524.
